E-mail Print PDF
Mark_Scirto_2The Greater Quitman Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that plans are firmly underway for the 38th Annual Membership Banquet and Chamber Awards Program to be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Carroll Green Civic Center beginning at 6:30 pm. This year's banquet promises to be very exciting! The Texas Tea Room will once again be catering a delicious meal - this year featuring roast beef with gravy or grilled chicken breast along with tasty side dishes, bread, salad and desserts. In keeping with tradition, the chamber will also be presenting awards for Citizen of the Year, Community Involvement, Community Spirit and Public Service. The nominations poured in this year and some very special people and businesses will be taking home plaques demonstrating how much they are appreciated in our community! The immensely popular "Heads or Tails" game will be played again under the direction of chamber director and volunteer extraordinaire, Bill Prague.  Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to bid on some pretty awesome live auction items. And the highlight of the evening promises to be KLTV meteorologist and noted TV personality, Mark Scirto, who has graciously agreed to be our guest speaker! We are very excited about this year's banquet and hope that you are, too! Tickets are on sale now and are $25.00 each. If your group would like to reserve a table, the cost is $250.00 and it seats 10 people. Tickets are available at the chamber office; from any chamber director; or by calling the chamber office. I will be glad to deliver tickets to you!
Join us February 23 at Carroll Green Civic Center for an evening of delicious food, good clean fun and Mark Scirto! Hope to see all of you there!

Police Academy to be held in Quitman

E-mail Print PDF
Beginning this February, Quitman will serve as one of the host cities for the East Texas Police Academy (ETPA). In the past, classes have been held in Sulphur Springs and Van but those locations have been eliminated based on economics and the need to maximize resources. Classes are now offered in only three locations - Kilgore, Athens and Quitman. Quitman Police Chief Kelly Cole and Captain Miles Tucker lobbied successfully to have the academy in Quitman. Both Cole and Tucker have been teaching at the ETPA for the past three years and are proud of their 100% success passing rate. The school is scheduled to begin the first week of February and classes are tentatively scheduled for Monday through Thursday evenings with an occasional Saturday class. Anyone interested in attending the academy should be signed up by January 25, 2012. For more information about the school you may call the Quitman Police Department and speak with Cole or Tucker or visit the ETPA website: www.easttexaspoliceacademy.org.
